Meet Your Avondale Teeth Whitening Team
Southern Dental Care is located in Marrero, but we always welcome patients from the neighboring area. We’re especially proud to give the residents of Avondale teeth whitening services. No matter what caused your teeth discoloration, we have several treatments and will recommend the appropriate one after our consultation.
What Causes Discolored Teeth?
Teeth can suffer two kinds of staining: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is the more common and the more easily treated, as it’s caused by the food and drinks we consume. Coffee, wine, soda, and dark-colored tea will discolor your teeth by laying chromogens, or pigment compounds, over your enamel. Even fruits and vegetables like berries and beets will cause staining. Another common factor is smoking because tar builds up on teeth.
Intrinsic stains, as their name suggests, come from within. For example, certain pharmaceuticals can slowly change the color of your teeth. Too much fluoride can mottle your teeth with white spots; this is a condition called dental fluorosis and is most commonly found in children. Discoloration can sometimes even be a congenital issue.
However, these stains are more frequently the result of aging or dental trauma. As you age, the enamel begins to wear away, revealing more of the bony, yellow tissue in the teeth called dentin. If you suffer a dental injury, internal bleeding will discolor the tooth. Teeth also produce more dentin as a defense mechanism when they’ve been injured, which means a yellower appearance.
Our Teeth Whitening Procedures
You may be aware that there are countless DIY teeth whitening kits out there. We discourage anyone from using these because the bleach or gel they contain can be highly acidic and wear away the enamel. Applying the substance unevenly, without professional help, can also lead to spotty teeth. Whitening strips are also problematic in that they won’t stick well compared to the ones you get at the dentist. At Southern Dental Care, we offer both in-office treatments and take-home kits.
Teeth whitening is for extrinsic stains only. Results will vary based on the type of extrinsic stain you have; for example, brown stains made by coffee will be harder to remove than yellow stains made by soft drinks or curry. The acidity level will also change the frequency of treatment, so consider the in-office treatment for more immediate results.
We’ll use a more concentrated product than the one you’ll find in the take-home kit, but Dr. Andreotta and her staff will expertly lay it across your teeth for consistent results. We’ll make sure that none of it gets on your skin or clothes. If, however, you decide on the take-home kit, you’ll get thorough instructions, and we’ll ask you to come in regularly so we can check on your progress. If your children have dental fluorosis, we’ll work on their teeth, but only if the affected teeth are permanent.
Our Dental Veneers
Veneers are the ultimate teeth whitening product because not only can they treat extrinsic and intrinsic stains, but they can also close gaps between teeth, alter the size of small or uneven teeth, and create an all-around dazzling smile. Our porcelain veneers are clear, ultra-thin strips that are attached to your teeth using a bonding material, and they’re permanent fixtures. Another benefit is that veneers can be made for a single tooth or for a whole row of them.
Come in for a Consultation
So whether you want teeth whitening to treat an injury, restore aging teeth, or simply boost your self-esteem, we’re here for you. During your initial consultation, we’ll determine what kind of stains you have and whether you’re eligible for teeth whitening. For example, you can’t go through this treatment if you have cavities, as the bleach will get right inside and cause pain.
Get ahold of Southern Dental Care today to schedule that consultation, and we’ll discuss our Avondale teeth whitening procedures in greater detail. Our number is 504-347-1014, and our office is open Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm.
