If you’re wondering who might give residents of Marrero BOTOX Cosmetic procedure, you might be surprised to know that our dentist at Southern Dental Care can. However, it makes sense that we should offer this treatment since the field of dentistry is full of cosmetic treatments that have medical benefits, and vice versa. Likewise, BOTOX comes with both cosmetic and medical benefits, but we need to be clear that it’s not for everyone.
What Is BOTOX?
BOTOX refers to the botulinum toxin, a poisonous substance known for causing botulism, or food poisoning. However, in small doses it can do wonders for your face. This toxin is injected directly into the muscles of your face to block nerve signals from reaching them; as a result, the muscles are paralyzed and the skin above them relaxes and smoothens out. BOTOX is used mainly to minimize the appearance of:
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Wrinkles around the lips and neck
It can also be used to correct an uneven smile, though treating facial asymmetry, in general, may be best left to a plastic surgeon.
As we mentioned, BOTOX comes with a range of medical benefits. For example, it’s ideal for those with stiff necks as well as those who suffer from dystonia. Dystonia is characterized by uncontrollable muscle spasms and can affect the jaw, neck, and vocal cords. Writer’s cramp is another more well-known form of dystonia.
It can relieve a variety of eye conditions, including blepharospasms, or eyelid spasms; lazy eye; and crossed eyes, in addition to its side effects like double vision and poor depth perception. Here are some other miscellaneous problems that BOTOX can address:
- Chronic migraines (15 or more a month)
- Overactive bladder
- Excessive sweating
It’s important to remember, though, that BOTOX cannot eliminate these altogether. To date, dystonia and blepharospasms have no cure.
What’s a Typical BOTOX Treatment Like?
BOTOX can be a one-time treatment, though to maintain the results, you’ll need it on a regular basis – every three to four months, normally. You’ll be glad to know that most patients don’t develop a resistance to the botulinum toxin, which means the dosage remains more or less the same during each session.
A typical session takes about one hour, and since it’s non-surgical and minimally invasive, you won’t feel much pain. (Most patients report that the injections feel like tiny pinpricks.) You’ll be able to see an improvement in three to four days. You may experience muscle fatigue, blurred vision, or dizziness, though you’ll only require medical attention if these symptoms persist.
Who’s Eligible for BOTOX?
When you visit, the first thing we’ll do is ask for your medical history and sit down for a thorough consultation. Our dentist will first see if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in our BOTOX products. Those with a breathing disorder or heart disease should probably stay clear of this treatment because some of the possible side effects – such as difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing – can aggravate their condition. Those with a skin disorder around the area that they want to be treated also cannot qualify. Also, BOTOX is not considered effective for those who suffer episodic migraines (14 or less a month).
Though BOTOX is targeted towards men and women between the ages of 40 and 60, we occasionally greet younger patients. However, breastfeeding mothers should not consider the treatment. Neither should seniors, as the treatment may end up bruising their skin.
