At Southern Dental Care, one of our specialties is Marrero dental implants, so if you live anywhere in our area and you have a chipped tooth, a gap, or several missing teeth in a row, you can consider them as a restorative option. Our dentist, Dr. Lacey Andreotta, is available Monday-Thursday, 8am – 5pm, & can set up appointments for any workday.
If you have missing teeth and you’re hesitating about consulting with a dentist, we advise you to have the gap filled as soon as possible; otherwise, your adjacent teeth will drift inwards, creating a change in your bite and causing your lips to pucker in and your face to sag. Those with a chipped tooth should know that it will need to be extracted before they can get a dental implant.
The Implant Process
An implant refers to a titanium post that’s screwed into the gum to fuse with the jawbone. The visible portion is called the abutment; this is what the artificial tooth will sit on.
The process may take anywhere around three months because the gums must be allowed to heal after the implantation. The actual surgery only takes an hour or two, so you’ll be in and out in no time. In cases of serious bone loss in the gums, our dentist will perform bone grafting and fit you with a temporary implant before moving on to the final step.
We can create your artificial tooth from a number of materials, including gold, silver, porcelain, or a combination of these. After making an impression of your mouth, our dentist and her staff will be able to custom-make your teeth. We’ll even match the color of your teeth so that the artificial teeth aren’t unrealistically white. (You might want to get teeth whitening before considering implants, though.)
The Benefits of Dental Implants
While the initial cost of an implant can seem expensive, it comes with several advantages. First of all, remember that missing teeth leads to bone loss in your gums (the bone is preserved by the pressure we exert through chewing, so with the resulting lack of pressure, it gets reabsorbed into the gum). That’s why patients who get dentures or dental bridges must always have their product readjusted or replaced. On the other hand, implants fuse with the bone and thus prevent bone loss. The only thing you would need to visit the dentist for is new artificial teeth, as these will naturally wear down with food and drink consumption.
Implants are more durable than dentures or bridges and can last several decades. There’s no danger of the product slipping out, there are no metal clasps to be self-conscious about, and eating will become a joy once again. However, there are still specific rules to follow with regards to cleaning the artificial teeth. Brushing them is essential since plaque will build up on them just as readily as on natural teeth; failing to do so could lead to a condition called peri-implantitis, or inflammation of the gums surrounding the implant.
Schedule a Consultation
During your consultation with Dr. Andreotta, you can ask about the cost of implants and whether your insurance will cover some or all of it. The cost can vary depending on how many teeth are missing and whether you need a bone grafting or a sinus lift (where we graft bones into the upper jaw). We’ll also look into your medical history to see if you’re eligible for the treatment.
