The time of year New Orleanians yearn for is finally here — Mardi Gras! The season filled with endless parades, balls, street parties, and live music is a great excuse to create a month’s worth of outstanding memories. Yet, sadly, Mardi Gras is not the best time for our teeth. A celebration that’s heavy in alcohol, sugar, and perhaps cigarettes won’t leave your smile very happy. But we know you’ll still want that picture-perfect smile that’ll make all your #mardigras photos worthy of likes. What can you do to make sure your smile looks picture perfect, white, and pretty? We’ve compiled a New Orleans dental checklist for Mardi Gras to keep you smiling throughout the Carnival season.
1. Brush More Often
Though nobody likes the taste of toothpaste mixed with Mardi Gras booze, brushing after you eat or drink can significantly improve the whiteness of your teeth. To make sure you’re brushing enough, it helps to have that travel-size toothbrush at hand wherever you go this season. You don’t have to brush right after each sip, but a few times a day about an hour after each round of drinks will do.
2. Floss Daily
Aside from possibly drinking more than usual, you’ll likely be consuming a lot more sugary treats and foods (like king cake) that can get trapped between your teeth. To make sure all sides of your teeth are healthy, don’t forget to floss everyday. There are many different ways to floss today, so you can chose the way that’s easiest for you this busy month.
3. Eat Properly
While king cake might not be the best for a smile, there are many foods that are great for your enamel: dark leafy greens, calcium-rich drinks, and foods like cheese, and, believe it or not, seafood. Many Mardi Gras foods contain the nutrients your smile needs so eat them with pride. Doing so will ensure a pretty-looking smile throughout the whole season
4. Follow a Dental Home Remedy
During those brief moments of downtime this month, look around your house to see if you can follow a remedy for your teeth. If you’re going to light up and smoke during Mardi Gras season, things you might already have around the house such as strawberries and bananas can help your smile. The malic acid in strawberries helps remove stains from alcohol and work as a natural tooth whitener, and banana peels contain manganese, magnesium and potassium, which also whiten teeth.
5. Consider Getting Tooth-Colored Fillings
You know you’re still going to want a white smile after the festivities are over, and that Mardi Gras gold definitely doesn’t belong in your mouth. If the season happens to bring you a cavity (or two), consider getting tooth-colored fillings to keep your teeth white no matter what. You won’t even notice that a filling is in your mouth!
6. Schedule a Whitening Appointment
Even if all you do this month still keeps your smile from looking its best, you don’t have to live with the yellowness. Our whitening treatments are here to help you.
