Do I Need a Dental Implant?
Dental implants are an excellent solution for permanently replacing an adult’s missing teeth. Any of the following scenarios could make you a good candidate for a dental implant:
- Dental disease or decay — Whether your tooth falls out on its own or needs to be removed by your dentist, dental disease or decay can lead to missing teeth. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects half of all Americans over 30 and is the leading cause of tooth loss!
- Tooth trauma — If enough force is applied to your mouth, it could knock out a tooth. Even if the tooth doesn’t fall out during your accident, it may become cracked, broken, or severely injured and need to be removed.
- Congenitally missing teeth — In some cases, an adult tooth never develops. Often the patient will have had a baby tooth, but no permanent tooth grew into its place after it fell out or was pulled out.
Unlike some other tooth replacement options, dental implants have the versatility to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth. For help determining whether you should receive our New Orleans dental implant services, please contact Southern Dental Care.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
In order to permanently replacing your missing tooth or teeth, members of our team would perform an implantation surgery. We begin by administering a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable, and then we usually remove the root of the damaged or missing tooth. We place a titanium post, which acts as an artificial tooth root, beneath your gum line and into your jawbone.
Next, you would spend several months healing. Afterward, we attach an additional connector post to your initial post. Your replacement tooth is mounted on the post, where it will stay permanently secured in your mouth.
