What To Expect During Your Root Canal Recovery
According to the American Association of Endodontists, more than 41,000 root canals are performed each day. However, root canals are still often thought of as an extremely painful procedure requiring weeks of recovery. A root canal in your tooth, caused decay or an infection, can be painful. However, the root canal procedure itself is virtually pain free.
Root canal treatment typically involves the removal of the tooth’s pulp, a small thread like tissue that was at one point important for tooth development. Once removed, your endodontist will replace the pulp with materials that seal off the root canal from its supporting structures, thus saving the tooth. Read our blog post about the symptoms, causes, and procedure if you think you are in need a root canal. As your Marrero root canal specialists, we want to prepare you for your root canal procedure and recovery. Read on to learn about what to expect during your root canal recovery and how to have the most successful post-procedure possible.
Root Canal Recovery 101
Once the anesthesia from the root canal procedure begins to wear off, you may experience slight discomfort and/or tenderness as you start your recovery. Often, this discomfort will be mild and subside in just a few days. You can manage these temporary symptoms with over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol). Your doctor may prescribe stronger narcotic medication as well.
After the procedure, you must wait to eat until the numbness wears off. Otherwise, you may end up biting your cheek or tongue. Don’t chew or bite down on the treated tooth until it is no longer tender. This will promote healing of the surrounding tissues.
Furthermore, root canal-treated teeth are more prone to chipping or breaking after the surgery. Your enddodontist will install a necessary dental crown to properly protect these teeth against future use. Make sure to avoid chewing or biting down on the treated tooth until your endodontist fully restores it. If you are getting a Marrero root canal treatment at Southern Dental Care, our endodontists will expertly install a dental crown during a follow up appointment.
