Are You Looking for the Best Westbank Teeth Whitening?

At Southern Dental Care, we proudly offer the residents of Westbank teeth whitening services. When you visit our office in Marrero, our owner, Dr. Lacey Andreotta, will examine your teeth to determine how extensive the discoloration is. We’ll then recommend a course of action that’s appropriate for you.

What Sort of Discoloration Do You Have?

This may sound like an odd question, but there are actually two types of discoloration: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is the more common form of discoloration because it forms on the outside through whatever you put in your mouth. Drinking wine, coffee, soda, and even dark-colored tea on a regular basis will lead to yellowing of the enamel. Smoking is another common cause because of the tar it leaves behind. Even vegetables like carrots and fruits like berries will leave their pigments over your teeth.

Intrinsic discoloration can arise in several ways. As you age, your enamel wears away and starts to show more of the bony, yellow tissue underneath, which is called dentin. Weakened enamel also allows extrinsic particles to lodge deeper in the teeth. Stains can be a hereditary issue as well. In addition, certain pharmaceuticals will change the color of your teeth. Too much fluoride, especially in children, will lead to intrinsic stains as well as dental fluorosis, which is characterized by white spots that form over the enamel.

If you recently experienced a form of dental trauma, then the bleeding within the teeth will discolor them. After any tooth injury, the pulp inside will produce more dentin to strengthen the tooth. The result will be yellower teeth.

About Teeth Whitening

Dr. Andreotta has a professional staff to assist her with teeth whitening, which involves the use of bleaching agents. Because these agents are high in acid content, we always recommend in-office treatments as opposed to over-the-counter teeth whitening kits. If applied incorrectly, these agents will eat away at your enamel. Without professional help, you might also be left with unevenly colored teeth. On the other hand, teeth whitening strips and toothpaste won’t cut it when you have severe discoloration. Our dentist will apply the bleach evenly, without letting it fall on your skin or clothes, and have you come back for several visits for thorough results.

You do, however, have the option of getting a take-home kit and performing a sort of DIY operation. For safety’s sake, our kits are lower in acid content, so results won’t be as immediate or as long-lasting as with our in-office whitening. We’ll give you instructions on how to use the kit, and we can keep track of any progress.

Note that teeth whitening can only address extrinsic discoloration. It works best on the yellow stains caused by food and drink, and it only has a small impact on brown stains, such as those caused by tooth decay. Teeth whitening agents will react violently to cavities, so we’ll take care of these first before proceeding with the cosmetic treatment. If you have children with fluorosis, please know that we can only perform whitening on permanent teeth.

About Dental Veneers

Veneers are shells that permanently go on top of teeth not only to make them whiter and brighter but also to strengthen them and, if necessary, make subtle changes to the size and shape of each tooth. Allow us to create custom veneers out of sturdy porcelain. These are a great option for one tooth or for several teeth, and what’s more, they will cover up the intrinsic discoloration that teeth whitening can’t fix. Our team may have to remove some of your enamel before placing the veneers, but the procedure won’t be too complicated.

Our Westbank teeth whitening boils down to those three high-quality options: bleaching in the office, bleaching at home, and dental veneers. To learn more about these treatments, give us a call at Southern Dental Care. Our phone number is 504-347-1014, and we’re available on weekdays, 8am – 5pm.
