Bridges on Teeth: When Do I Need Them?

Understanding When You Need a Bridge on Teeth

There are a variety of dental procedures and devices that serve different purposes, such as fixing crooked teeth or realigning an entire row of teeth. One of these devices is called a bridge. Understanding when you need a bridge on teeth – or even what a dental bridge is – will be important so you can take care of your smile and protect your ability to chew food.

What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are used to bring together gaps between teeth or where a tooth is missing. The bridge itself is made of two or more crowns that sit on either side of the gap. A false tooth – or pontic – can then be placed in this gap between the neighboring teeth, referred to as abutment teeth. Pontics are made from materials such as gold, silver, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of materials. Natural teeth (implants) can be used to support bridges.

When You Need a Bridge

Bridges are most commonly used for restoring a smile. They can also assist in the ability to chew or even to speak. They help keep the shape of the mouth and also the face by distributing the forces of the jaw while biting or chewing. Bridges are especially useful for when a tooth is missing or damaged. Once installed, a dental bridge can help prevent the teeth remaining in your mouth from drifting out of position. Before pursuing a dental bridge or other dental work, a consultation with your dentist is a necessary step. At Southern Dental Care, patients are seen and given recommendations for the kind of dental work they need, whether they need a dental bridge or another type of service offered. It is possible to get a better smile!

Types of Dental Bridges

There are also a number of different kinds of dental bridges available for those patients in need of one. The three main types include traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bended bridges. Traditional bridges create a crown for a tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, then utilize a pontic in between the two. The material used is most commonly porcelain fused to either metal or ceramic. In cantilever bridges, only one adjacent tooth remains. Because of the nature of this style, it is not recommended to be used at the back of the mouth. Finally, the Maryland bonded bridge (also known as a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge) uses porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported with metal or porcelain framework. These wings are installed often on just one side of the bridge and are bonded to existing, natural teeth.

Modern dentistry offers a variety of methods for adjusting dental issues. The flexibility of available materials means affordable, durable, and well-fitting pieces. Dental bridges are an example of a popular method that produces great outcomes. When considering getting work done, understanding when you need a bridge on teeth is important for mending your smile or missing tooth.
