What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a cap that covers your tooth. Your natural tooth should not be visible under a crown. These caps can be made of porcelain, resin, ceramic, metal, or stainless steel, and they can be temporary or permanent based on the purpose of the crown. Read more about the circumstances that require a crown below, or contact Southern Dental Care about our Marrero crowns service.
Do I Need a Dental Crown?
Crowns are common solutions for a wide range of dental issues. You may need a crown to:
- Strengthen a tooth that needs a large filling but lacks enough natural tooth to support the filling.
- Protect a weakened tooth from breaking.
- Hold together a cracked tooth.
- Restore a tooth that is worn down or broken.
- Attach a dental bridge and keep it in place.
- Cover a misshapen or discolored tooth or a dental implant.
It might not always be obvious to the untrained eye that you need a crown, so you should always come in for regular dental visits. If it becomes apparent that you need a crown, Southern Dental Care offers New Orleans, Avondale, Estelle, Harvey, Woodmere, and Marrero crowns.
How Should I Care for a Dental Crown?
If you receive a temporary crown while you wait for a permanent crown, you will want to be careful to avoid accidentally removing it. We recommend that you try to chew on the other side of your mouth and skip foods that are hard, chewy, or sticky.
With permanent crowns, you do not need to do anything differently than you would for a natural tooth. You should brush, floss, and use mouthwash as normal, because crowns do not prevent cavities or gum disease. If your crown ever becomes chipped or loose, if your crown falls off, or if your crown causes you pain, be sure to contact us.
For Marrero crowns, schedule an appointment with Southern Dental Care. Our office is located at 7301 Westbank Expressway in Marrero, but we are happy to serve clients from all over the greater New Orleans area.
