Our Estelle Teeth Whitening Team
Southern Dental Care is ready to give the residents of Estelle teeth whitening services that will restore their smile and their self-esteem while treating certain dental conditions at the same time. We’re just a short drive away in Marrero, and our dentist, Dr. Lacey Andreotta, will be happy to speak with you about your options.
The Use of Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is ideal for common stains caused by the foods and drinks we consume. For example, tea, coffee, wine, and soda are all drinks that will lead to staining. Eating curry will lead to yellow teeth (though yellow stains are easier to eliminate with teeth whitening than the brown stains left by coffee). Even fruits like berries and vegetables like carrots will leave their pigments on your teeth. Smoking is another more obvious culprit as the tar will stick to your teeth. Fluorosis, or the over-consumption of fluoride in children, is a condition that leads to stains in a mottled pattern.
To address these extrinsic stains, our dentist will apply an acidic bleaching agent to your teeth over the course of several sessions. We’ll be careful not to spill any of this over your skin or clothes, and we’ll make sure it’s evenly applied so that the results are uniform.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits
Here at Southern Dental Care, you have the option of whitening your teeth at home. Our dentist will thoroughly instruct you on its use, and for your safety, the bleaching agents in these kits are lower in acidity than the ones we utilize during our in-office treatments. (Precisely one of the problems with over-the-counter teeth whitening kits is their high acidity.) This does mean, however, that results will not be as immediate. However it’s administered, teeth whitening does not guarantee permanent results. We’ll advise you on how to maintain the appearance of your teeth.
A Note of Caution
It’s important to note, however, that teeth whitening isn’t recommended for those who suffer from cavities or who have recently had a tooth filled. The hydrogen peroxide can cause pain and severe headaches if it seeps into a cavity, and it has been shown to weaken the bonding strength of fillings. Since teeth whitening doesn’t change the color of fillings, you may be left with uneven results. While teeth whitening can address fluorosis, you must make sure that your child’s teeth are his or her permanent teeth.
The Use of Dental Veneers
The stains that teeth whitening cannot remove are called intrinsic stains. There are numerous causes for these, including even heredity. The most common, though, are aging and dental trauma. With age, the enamel wears away and makes the underlying dentin more prominent. This leads to intrinsically yellow teeth. If you incur dental trauma, internal bleeding can lead to discoloration. The damaged tooth also develops more dentin to strengthen itself, leading to more stains.
This is where dental veneers come in. These are thin, clear shells, usually made from porcelain, that go directly over the affected tooth or teeth and stay there permanently. To make sure that the veneers fit, we may have to scrape away some enamel. However, the veneers will be custom-made. The benefits of veneers go beyond having a whiter smile. They can restore the shape of chipped, cracked, or naturally deformed teeth as well as increase the size of small teeth. This also serves to close up gaps between teeth.
